Introduction
Like other developing countries disability is one of the prime
development concerns in Bangladesh. For a long period of time,
disability is approached as a charity issue. In Bangladesh where
severe poverty, malnutrition, political strife, illiteracy and a
huge population pressure is the persistent truth, we have little
scope to do charity for disable people. Even though it was the fact
that Bangladesh is capable, a charity approach is definitely barrier
to the development of the person with disability.
There are many types of disabilities in Bangladesh. A major portion
of that is the intellectual disability, associated with epileptic
and attention deficiency hyperactivity disorder. The existing
education facilities as well as the approaches are very much
inaccessible for the children with intellectual and related
disabilities. These children also need education, aspiration and
skills to make their own future independent.
Shishu Kendra in Action
Realizing this necessity, a group of social worker initiated a
support trust for these children with disabilities, by the leading
initiative of Mr. A. T. M. Zakir Hossain, Executive Director of JJS.
In July 01 2001, his initiative came to a real shape aiming all
sorts of physiotherapy, occupational therapy, education, regular
medical check up, skill training and other support programme for the
children like parents counseling, community education and advocacy
on the issue.
Aims of Shishu Kendra
The Shishu Kendra has been launched to achieve following goals.
Shishu Kendra will
provide basic supports of the children with epilepsy and
intellectual disability.
It will ensure the
improvement support to the children with epilepsy and intellectually
disabled.
The center aims to
incorporate the broader society into this program so that the
forthcoming children with disability will be able to get better and
basic humanistic support continuously.
Shishu Kendra
will try to create very positive attitudes to include these children
in mainstream education and help them to make their position in the
society through parents counseling, community education and advocacy
on this issue.
